The Best-Ever Social Media Campaigns
Interesting piece on Forbes.com yesterday about ‘The Best-Ever Social Media Campaigns’.
The social-media effort for “The Blair Witch Project” has been ranked by Forbes and a panel of marketing experts as the best campaign of its type. Other social-media campaigns making this “best-ever” list include Old Spice’s “Smell Like a Man, Man,” Burger King’s “Subservient Chicken” and OfficeMax’s “Elf Yourself.”
The top ten picked by the panel of judges were:
- “The Blair Witch Project”
- Blendtec: Will it blend?
- Old Spice: “Smells Like a Man, Man”
- Burger King: “Subservient Chicken”
- Pepsi Refresh
- VW: “Fun Theory”
- OfficeMax: “Elf Yourself”
- Evian: “Roller Babies”
- Ikea: “Facebook Showroom”
- Hotmail
Not sure I agree with all those entries, but I’m certainly a big fan of #2, #3, #4, #6 and #8 – what are your favourites?

YouTube Bids for Screen Dominance

According to this BBC article, The world’s biggest video site wants to dominate every screen where content can be viewed and created.
YouTube is already a leader online and in mobile and has firmly set its sights on the living room.
The company charted its course during the launch of a new product called Leanback, described by some as web video for couch potatoes.
It also unveiled upgrades for its mobile site which has over 100 million playbacks a day.
“You can start to break down the mental picture of ‘these are the videos I watch on my computer, on my tv or on my phone,’” Hunter Walk, director of product management told BBC News.
“Now you just say ‘these are the videos I watch and I watch them wherever I happen to be, or whoever I happen to be with’. We are going to have a world where people increasingly expect their content to be available to them on anything with a screen, whether that be a computer, a phone or a tv. That is the vision,” said Mr Walk.

YouTube Exceeds Two Billion Views Per Day
YouTube has announced that it has reached a new milestone, serving over two billion views per day:
Today, thanks to you, our site has crossed another milestone: YouTube exceeds over two billion views a day. That’s nearly double the prime-time audience of all three major U.S. television networks combined.
What started as a site for bedroom vloggers and viral videos has evolved into a global platform that supports HD and 3D, broadcasts entire sports seasons live to 200+ countries. We bring feature films from Hollywood studios and independent filmmakers to far-flung audiences. Activists document social unrest seeking to transform societies, and leading civic and political figures stream interviews to the world.
YouTube has been the biggest success story of the new media revolution, but they’re aiming higher, gunning for traditional TV audiences:
Although the average user spends 15 minutes a day on YouTube, that’s tiny compared to the five hours a day people spend watching TV. Clearly, we need to give you more reason to watch more videos! And we want to give you all the tools and support to make YouTube both your career and your community. After all, this is only the beginning of the video revolution. We’re just getting started.
To do that, YouTube is going to need to need to attract long-form content and remove some of the barriers that keep people from sitting back and watching for longer periods of time.

The Most Engaged Brands On The Web
What big brands do the best job with social media? A new study by analyst Charlene Li of the Altimeter Group and Wetpaint ranks the top 100 brands by social media engagement. You can find the report embedded below or on ENGAGEMENTdb, which was presumably created with Wetpaint’s site-creation software.
The study scores the engagement level of each of the top 100 brands across more than ten social media channels, including blogs, Facebook, Twitter, wikis, and discussion forums. Starbucks scored the highest, with 127 points. The top ten brands are:
1. Starbucks (127)
2. Dell (123)
3. eBay (115)
4. Google (105)
5. Microsoft (103)
6. Thomson Reuters (101)
7. Nike (100)
8. Amazon (88)
9. SAP (86)
10. Tie – Yahoo!/Intel (85)
The report categorizes brands into one of four types, depending on how many social media channels they participate in. The most engaged are “mavens,” while the least engaged are “wallflowers” (McDonalds and BP are examples). The study claims a correlation between social media engagement and revenue growth. The “mavens” saw revenues grow an average of 18 percent over the past 12 months, while the Wallflowers saw revenues drop 6 percent. I really doubt that their level of social media engagement had anything to do with their revenue growth, it is just that the strongest brands are the most engaged.

Facebook users say yes to changes
According to this BBC article, Facebook users have voted to back changes which give them control over data and content they post on the site.
Early results suggest 75% of those who voted support the proposals.
The vote was triggered by changes Facebook made to its terms and conditions in February.
The move drew fire because it appeared to hand the social network site ownership of images, videos and data that users posted on profile pages.

Video at the heart of The Queen's new look website
According to this article on the BBC, the Queen has this week redesigned (obviously not personally!) and relaunched her website.
The site went live at a Buckingham Palace reception attended by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, widely recognised as the world wide web’s inventor. The royal site, which started in 1997, now includes more video material as well as historical documents.
About 250,000 people around the world visit the site each week.
Apparently, The Queen stood in front of a bank of nine screens and clicked a remote control to re-launch the site. The Monarchy site’s homepage appeared showing a range of simple menus and tabs which it is hoped will make it easier to navigate.
To check out the revamped site visit Royal.gov.uk
It’s also worth noting that Royal.gov.uk is not the only presence the Queen has on the internet. In 2007, she launched her own channel on the video-sharing website YouTube.
