The launch of a specialist podcast show for People Managers in the public sector

2colorlr_3This week saw the launch of my specialist podcast show for People Managers in the public sector, surprisingly called Public Sector HR Podcast. It has taken two months of planning, research, design and interviewing, but finally my latest project has gone live.

I’ve been really encouraged by the postive response the show has received, despite that fact that many HR practitioners I have spoken to are not familiar with podcasting, which of course is one of the challenges of using such a new business communication tool. In fact, we have already been asked by a number of authorities to produce podcasts for them.

The first show on Leadership, includes interviews with a prominent HR Director and an award winning Managing Director and it’s interesting to hear their individual experiences of success in this crucial area.

I’m now busy putting together the second show on the subject of ‘Pay’ – which of course is highly topical, as industrial action over pay claims has narrowly been avoided this week.

Have a listen to the show and feel free to give me feedback or suggestions for future shows. You can email me at karen@publicsectorhrpodcast.co.uk. I look forward to hearing from you.

Great leadership is always well rewarded

I met a really inspirational Leader last week – Jack Hegarty, Managing Director at Wychavon District Council. And his leadership skill has recently been rewarded by his staff, when they gave him a 78% positive score for "Employees have a great deal of faith in the person leading the organisation" question, in The Times Best Councils to Work For Survey 2007.This, combined with the fact that he knows each of his 300+ workforce by name, often gets ‘back to the floor’ and meets each new recruit for a chat, led him to be named the ‘Best Leader’ by The Times. This comes hot on the heels of the Council winning the coveted Local Government Chronicle ‘Council of the Year’ 2007 title.

When I asked Jack for his secret, he told me that he believes in doing the simple things well and good communication is at the top of his agenda. Having clarity of vision and ensuring that everybody in the organisation knows what the objectives are and their role in achieving them is paramount. Being highly visible, inclusive and approachable are what makes Jack such an effective leader. We should all take a leaf or two out of your book, many congratulations!
