Facebook users say yes to changes

According to this BBC article, Facebook users have voted to back changes which give them control over data and content they post on the site.

Early results suggest 75% of those who voted support the proposals.

The vote was triggered by changes Facebook made to its terms and conditions in February.

The move drew fire because it appeared to hand the social network site ownership of images, videos and data that users posted on profile pages.

YouTube blocks UK music videos

YouTube is blocking all premium music videos to UK users after failing to reach a new licensing agreement with the Performing Right Society (PRS).

Thousands of videos became unavailable to YouTube users from late yesterday.

Patrick Walker, YouTube’s director of video partnerships, stated that the move was “regrettable”. Steve Porter, head of the PRS, said he was “outraged… shocked and disappointed” by YouTube’s decision.

In a statement, Mr Porter said the move “punishes British consumers and the songwriters whose interests we protect and represent”.

The PRS has asked YouTube to reconsider its decision as a “matter of urgency”.

Facebook tweaks site to rival Twitter

According to a BBC News article Facebook has revamped it’s site in an effort to take on social media sensation Twitter.

Starting from next week, there will be a new homepage on Facebook that lets users receive continuous updates from their friends instead of every 10 or 15 minutes. Making the application oh so similar to Twitter with its much loved instant 140 caricature ‘Tweets’.

Facebook’s also adding filters so people can choose which of their friends to keep up with and which to silence.

Inauguration – were you new or old media?

Following on the President Obama theme from my last post – I read with interest this article by Rory Cellan-Jones on the BBC News’s technology blog dot.life entitled ‘Inauguration – were you old or new media?’ The article outlines Rory’s attempts to experience the inauguration in as many ways as possible using both new and old media.

Among other things, he watched the BBC’s TV coverage, surfed numerous news websites, followed tweets on Twitter, got social with Facebook’s link up with CNN and even downloaded the new iPhone application from Ustream to watch a live stream of the AP coverage. To find out what Rory’s experience’s were like and how new and old media performed read the article here.

Also, remember to check out dot.life on a regular basis – I think it’s one of the BBC’s best blogs… and they have quite a few to choose from that you can find at the BBC Blog Network.
