Social Media Skills Nearly as Important as Traditional Media Skills for PR Professionals

The 2009 Digital Readiness Report, a study recently published in America by Eric Schwartzman with the support of online newsroom provider iPressroom, Korn/Ferry International, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and Trendstream, highlights the growing importance of social media in the PR profession there.

In a dramatic shift away from the mainstream media approach to public relations, PR hiring managers in the US now say it’s nearly as important for prospective hires to be social media savvy, as it is for them to have traditional media relations skills.

Streaming Of US TV Shows & Movies Has Doubled In A Year

Recent media research firm IPSOS has found that twice as many Americans are streaming TV shows and movies as were doing so a year ago.

In the past 30 days, 26% of online Americans have streamed a full-length TV show and 14% have streamed a full-length movie. This is more than double the levels measured in September 2008.

Young adults 18 to 24 years of age are the most ardent supporters of this medium. In the past 30 days, 30% have streamed a full-length movie and 51% have streamed a full-length TV show, which represent dramatic increases from last year.

Despite the popularity of Internet television, people still have a clear preference for viewing video on their televisions rather than a computer.

Currently, the average American with Internet access watches 15 hours of television per week, compared to less than two hours on their PC. Even among digital video users, 64% would rather watch hour-long dramas and half-hour comedies live on their TV than rent or purchase them, or watch them on their PC or portable device.

Check out the research here.

Twitter Helps To Keep Customers Happy At Kabuki

I’ve just read a great story about how a restaurant is using social media monitoring really effectively.

In this case, they noticed a customer’s negative comment on Twitter and then responded immediately to rectify the situation by offering her a free appetizer as compensation.

I wish this happened more often. Here’s the story in full…

Business Ears Show #040: Thomas Mahon Of English Cut Talks Tailoring And Blogging

Business Ears show #040 was released last Friday and features an interview with Thomas Mahon, who after fifteen years in Savile Row is widely recognised as one of the best tailors in the world.

Given that Tom’s clients include royalty, as well as the rich and famous, it’s remarkable that he runs his business from rural Cumbria…but that’s exactly what he does. One of the key reasons he’s been able to do that is down to the success of his blog ‘English Cut’ recently listed in The Sunday Times best 100 blogs.

In the interview, Tom talks about what brought him back to Cumbria after many years in London, he explains the positive impact that English Cut has had on his business and gives the best definition of the difference between a blog and a website I’ve ever heard.

You can listen to Tom’s interview here and to check out previous shows visit www.businessears.co.uk
