New Show From Public Sector HR Podcast on Recruiting Social Workers
Public Sector HR Podcast show #019 was released recently with a focus on Recruiting Social Workers.

Recruiting and retaining social workers has been a big challenge for a lot of authorities for many years. High profile cases like Baby P have not helped to attract new people into the profession, which is why the government recently announced a £58m recruitment and training package.
The show this month focuses on how East Sussex County Council has managed to buck this trend and recruit 28 social workers with one campaign. Lou Carter, Assistant Director of Planning and Performance in Children’s Services at the council, talks about what she believes has made their approach work so well.
We also hear from Kathryn Kelly, who is managing the IDeA’s campaign to raise awareness of Social Work as a career – part of the LGA’s Respect, Recruit, Retain campaign.

Report Lays Out UK Digital Future
The long-awaited Digital Britain report, which lays out the UK government’s strategy for broadband and digital content was published today.
One of the biggest surprises in the report was the promise to introduce a levy on fixed telephone lines in order to pay for fast broadband rollout to those areas of the country – estimated to be around one-third – which won’t be reached by commercial efforts.
It will amount to a 50p a month tax for every household in the country with a fixed phone line.
The main points outlined in the report include:
- a three-year plan to boost digital participation
- universal access to broadband by 2012
- fund to invest in next generation broadband
- digital radio upgrade by 2015
- liberalisation of 3G spectrum
- legal and regulatory attack on digital piracy
- support for public service content partnerships
- changed role for Channel 4
- consultation on how to fund local, national and regional news
- £130m of BBC licence fee to pay for ITV regional news

In order to reflect the progressive role of local government in the 21st century, the culture within councils is set to change and to ensure success, elected members need to lead this culture change within their organisations. This podcast outlines the work of the LGA HR Panel and explains how elected members can drive ‘Change’ forward.
Take a look and let us know what you think.
Check out the new video, as well as previous podcasts we’ve produced for the Local Government Employers, on the LGE podcast page.
