Nearly 40 million Britons could be viewing your website

I read an article recently in eMarketer about Internet consumption in the UK in 2007. Some 36.8 million Britons went online last year and at it’s current growth rate, that number is expected to rise to 42.8 million by 2012, which accounts for about 70% of the population.

When you see these kind of statistics, it highlights for me how important it is for all organisations to have a powerful online strategy in place – one that really makes the most of their internet presence. If we don’t, our competitors will!

EmployerCAST to build and promote your Employer Brand

The importance of effective Employer Brand Management is something that savvy organisations are starting to take far more seriously, as they grasp the link between their bottom line profits and what existing and potential employees think about them as an employer.

So how do you go about managing an employer brand then?

From our perspective, more and more clients are asking us to build and promote their employer brands internally and externally using podcasts. These ‘employer broadcasts’ or as we call them ‘EmployerCASTS’ prove incredibly powerful, because they bring an organisation’s employer brand to life.

Let me explain a little more…an EmployerCAST™ is an audio or video podcast, hosted on an intranet or internet site that communicates messages to existing and potential employees. EmployerCASTS™ increase the likelihood that you’ll motivate and retain your existing team and attract and recruit the best new talent. Just imagine hearing the CEO talking passionately about your organisation’s vision and values or your employees waxing lyrical about why someone should join you.

There are numerous resources out there that claim to ‘demystify’ the subject of Employer Branding, for a great overview of best practice, check out the CIPD’s free guide entitled ‘Employer Branding: a no-nonsense approach’ – it’s well worth a read.

Podcasts aren't just for the young

If you think it’s only ‘Generation Y’ (c.16 to 26 year olds) that listen to podcasts, then you’d be mistaken. Recent research, published in eMarketeer, suggests that podcasts are consumed by all age groups, with the fastest growth amongst 50 to 64 year olds.

The research, which surveyed people that had listened to a podcast in the last 30 days, noted a nearly even gender split between male and female podcast listeners, 25 to 34 year olds making up the largest single age group with 24% representation in the study.

It appears, as I have long believed, that podcasting is for everyone!

Enhance your audio podcasts with a quick video 'hello' from you or your guests

I’ve just published a new show over at Business Ears – the fortnightly North West business podcast that I produce – and for the first time I’ve added a quick bit of video from my guest Dawn Gibbins MBE – the dynamic Chairman of Flowcrete.

The reason for adding the video, stems from the fact that I’m always thinking of ways to increase the level of my audience’s engagement and thought a quick video ‘trailer’ would do the trick – which it certainly seems to have done.

It’s really easy to do – just open a YouTube account, upload your video and then copy the HTML code to embed the video into your website or blog. Check out the following help page for instructions.

The feedback I’ve received has been great and I plan to add a video ‘hello’ from every show guest from now on. I’ll also be adding videos to my clients podcasts, as it will undoubtedly further help to engage their customers and employees.
