Innovative Corporate Plan Podcast from Wyre Borough Council

WyreWe’ve just produced a new podcast for one of our clients, Wyre Borough Council specifically to promote their new three year Corporate Plan, to the citizens of the Borough of Wyre. You can listen to the podcast and download a copy to keep at the council’s website, click here to visit the podcast homepage.

The 9:00 minute podcast features senior members of the council’s management team explaining in straightforward terms what the corporate plan is, how it will be achieved and most importantly, the benefits it will deliver to citizens.

The podcast also acts as an innovative employee engagement tool profiling a number of the council’s staff, or as they refer to them ‘Local Heroes’, who explain how their day-to-day achievements help make the corporate plan a reality.

The Future of Candidate Attraction

We’re working away here at Prized People Towers on an exciting new service that we’ll launch to the world in January 08.

Whilst carrying out some research around how employers will recruit in the future, I came across this amazing clip. It really brought home to me just how different the workplace of future generations will be.

Produced by Karl Fisch and Scott McLeod this video is 8 minutes long and is well worth taking the time to watch. It highlights how ‘different’ jobseekers will be in the future and how difficult it will be to recruit them, particularly for those organisations that don’t keep pace with Web 2.0 technology.

So watch this space for news on how we can help you keep up to speed…and I hope you enjoy the film!

Did you know that 97 billion emails are sent each day!

Email is something that most of us can no longer live without and whilst with a visiting relative recently, I realised just how much it can take over our lives. She was on a few days vacation and had brought her trusty BlackBerry with her, which she checked at regular intervals throughout her trip. I was shocked to hear that she regularly receives as many as 45 emails a day.

Then I read a couple of articles that made me realise she’s not alone. An Australian student journalist Matt Moore writes:

"This year there’ll be about 35 trillion emails sent (97 billion a day). That’s approximately 17 emails a day for every person on the planet, with about 40% of these (7 per person) being spam"

Another worry is how this affects us, according to People Management magazine, "responding to every new message as it arrives can become addictive", they go on to say "opening in batches is more efficient and less stressful."

They suggest 9 ways to manage email more effectively:

  1. Decide when to check emails
  2. Delete, deal or delay
  3. Attach only if necessary
  4. Use rules and abbreviations
  5. Train staff in good practice
  6. Provide ongoing support
  7. Establish email protocol
  8. Limit group emails
  9. Enable email archiving

The overall message seems to be that rather than being an efficient tool, email can take over our lives and even intrude on our general effectiveness. We need to make sure that we are managing it rather than it managing us.

BlackBerry owners take heed!

Is the future going to be 'Totally Rewarding'?

I’ve had a number of discussions this week around the thorny issue of pay, particularly in the Public Sector. You may recall that industrial action by Local Government workers angry at the Government’s tough stance on pay awards, was narrowly avoided a few weeks ago. And the unrest looks set to continue into next year.

Some believe one solution might be the somewhat controversial shift to a ‘Total Reward’ approach. In fact, the Government wants 50% of local councils to have introduced Total Rewards by 2010.

One Council that has done a lot of work in this area is Cambridgeshire County Council. Stephen Moir who is Director of People & Policy there, believes Total Reward includes pay & benefits as you would expect, but in addition it is about access to learning and development, the working environment, the values and culture of the organisation, as well as having high quality leadership. He told me what he thinks makes the most difference “Communication is key to to total reward, the more people understand, the more people have an awareness of their value both in monetary terms and as an individual to the organisation, the more total reward works.”

As a communicator by profession, I wholeheartedly agree with Stephen’s view.
