Podcasting reaches Ministerial levels
I recently interviewed The Rt Hon Beverley Hughes MP, Minister of State for Children, Young People and Families and newly appointed Minister for the North West, for a podcast we recorded at an event held by the North West Employers Organisation, that recognised the successful development of Elected Councillors in Local Government.
The Minister presented awards to the Councils that have this year achieved ‘Charter’ recognition for their work in training and developing elected members of their councils. Afterwards, she told me “It’s absolutely critical that we have good people in councillor roles, leading councils, giving councils good political leadership and working really closely with their communities and meeting those communities needs. That’s what is at the heart of local government for me.”
It was useful to be reminded of the huge role that ‘Elected Members’ have to play in the leadership and direction of our local authorities. I’ll consider that the next time my local elections come around.

Why you should smile for bigger profits
Great article by Adrian Furnham in yesterday’s Sunday Times with the headline ‘Smile for bigger profits’. Basically, what it talks about is the good old ‘service profit chain’ – the simple idea that good management leads to satisfied staff who perform great service, which leads to repeat custom and profitability.
But the only way this model works, is if managers communicate well and boost morale rather than destroy it, as Furnham points out "People treat their customers in the same way as they are treated by their boss".
So for happy staff, satisfied customers and bigger profits – remember to smile!

Why employers should sign the 'Skills Pledge'
This week I went to a North West launch of the employers ‘Skills Pledge’ at the swish Lowry Hotel in Manchester. The event was jointly hosted by the North West Employers Organisation and the Learning Skills Council and featured a number of speakers including Neil Scales, Chief Executive of Merseytravel
and Maggie Mooney, Chief Executive of Carlisle City Council. Both Maggie and Neil talked about the tremendous improvements in morale, customer service and financial performance since introducing ‘Skills for Life’ training and urged other organisations to sign the pledge.
Liz McQue, Chief Executive Designate of the NWEO, described the event as “a great success because local authorities are better armed with information about what support they can get, so that we can really raise our game on the skills agenda for the workforce and our communities”.
We captured some of the key points of the event in a podcast which can be heard by clicking here.

The launch of a specialist podcast show for People Managers in the public sector
This week saw the launch of my specialist podcast show for People Managers in the public sector, surprisingly called Public Sector HR Podcast. It has taken two months of planning, research, design and interviewing, but finally my latest project has gone live.
I’ve been really encouraged by the postive response the show has received, despite that fact that many HR practitioners I have spoken to are not familiar with podcasting, which of course is one of the challenges of using such a new business communication tool. In fact, we have already been asked by a number of authorities to produce podcasts for them.
The first show on Leadership, includes interviews with a prominent HR Director and an award winning Managing Director and it’s interesting to hear their individual experiences of success in this crucial area.
I’m now busy putting together the second show on the subject of ‘Pay’ – which of course is highly topical, as industrial action over pay claims has narrowly been avoided this week.
Have a listen to the show and feel free to give me feedback or suggestions for future shows. You can email me at karen@publicsectorhrpodcast.co.uk. I look forward to hearing from you.
